Llangwm 28 - Fishguard 45 Referee: Kenny Davies (who controlled the game very well) Fishguard produced some excellent rugby to gain a deserved victory over their counterparts from Llangwm at Pill Parks. Llangwm could have few complaints as for two-thirds of an entertaining contest they struggled to contain the pace and power of Fishguard. The Young Seagulls scored seven excellent tries, William Robinson converting five of these and threatening to run away with the game. Llangwm though showed real spirit and fight as the game wore on, claiming four tries of their own, all converted by Oscar Willington. From the first whistle Fishguard showed an intent to keep the ball alive, their quick-phase play and ball retention really catching the eye. Within five minutes they had claimed a 12-point lead as the impressive Will Thomas broke blind from his scrum-half berth to run in from halfway, Jack Richards adding a second touchdown after numerous phases. Fishguard doubled their lead after 25 minutes as Llangwm failed to cope with the continuity of their play; backs and forwards combining in flowing moves seeing Taine Williams and Dafydd Davies add further tries. At that point the Seagulls lost a player to the sin bin and Llangwm took advantage, finally securing some good field position and following a good drive by Kieran Sinclair, fellow prop George Nicholls crashed over to take the score to 7-24 at half-time. The second-half started in similar fashion to the first with Fishguard camping themselves in Llangwm territory. Following a couple of missed opportunities, they added two more tries via their excellent No.8 Ifan Evans and, following a superb break by Dom Sinnett, centre Jesse James also got on the score sheet. Llangwm though were steadily growing into the game and were rewarded with a close range try from Dylan O’Loughlin after good work by the pack. Chasing the game though brings risks and Fishguard hit back soon after as Llangwm possession went loose in midfield and centre Sinnett collected the loose ball, racing 50 metres to claim a deserved score for a good all-round performance. With the score sitting at 14-45 the game looked done but Llangwm showed great spirit to dominate the final ten minutes as Fishguard maybe sat on their lead - and Llangwm threw everything at their opponents and claimed two further close range tries via Dylan Rowles and a second for O’Loughlin as reward for a wholehearted effort. These two youth teams produced a feast of rugby on the day in a full-blooded contest. Fishguard coach Randall Williams was delighted with a return to winning ways for his team, whilst John Rowles and Hamish Nicholls were left ruing a slow start from their Llangwm charges.
Wasps miss out in close battle Llanybydder 24 - Llangwm 20 Llandovery claimed their first victory of the season as they fended off the strong challenge of a Llangwm team still seeking their theirs but falling just short, but earning praise from a Llandovery official for the way they approached the game. Indeed, our Llandovery spokesperson said that they couldn’t have complained had they lost – but deserved credit for winning after outstanding No 8 Joshua Jones suffered a dislocated shoulder and flanker Steffan Thomas joined him in hospital The Wasps were 12-3 adrift at the interval as Harry Makepeace landed their penalty whilst playing well alongside Dylan Philpott at half back, with Jac Roberts posing a threat after switching from wing to centre, whilst Yale Grice also looked at home in the back row alongside Morgan Scott-Walker and No 8 Jordan Evans, who was their man of the match and claimed two tries as Callum Jenkins, Gavin Jones, Charlie Wilson and Joe Newton battled hard in the ball-winning stakes. Joshua Jones and winger Travis Davies scored first half tries for the homesters, one converted by outside half Mathew Rollins, with others following by centres Iestyn Evans and Tomos Evans, one converted by Rollins. As well as Evans’ try brace for The Wasps there was also a try by Makepeace alongside a conversion and there were encouraging signs as there was total commitment and willingness to run the ball via Steve Brown, Ollie Gerson, Josh Griffiths and new recruit Rhys Llewellyn. Llangwm: Rhys Llewellyn: Ollie Gerson; Jac Roberts; Steve Brown; Josh Griffiths: Harry Makepeace; Dylan Philpott: Joe Newton; Owain Jones; Callum Jenkins: Gavin Jones; Charlie Wilson: Morgan Scott-Walker: Yale Grice; Jordan Evans. Replacements: Matthew Rees; Flynn Tjoonk; Giovanni Hutchings
