U11's v Fishguard 22nd Jan 2023

The wonderful Llangwm u11’s welcomed Fishguard to a muddy Pill Parks for a hard game against a dogged Fishguard side that unfortunately only traveled with 9 players, so on a pitch made up for 12v12 it was 9v9 and that resulted in plenty of space out wide which always suits our game.

The young wasps started like they did against saints last week, on the front foot, giving Fishguard no time at all on the ball and with Harry calling everyone forward and Ollie winning a turnover it resulted in the first try of the game for Nico who pinned his ears back and dived over the line for his first try. The wasps were flinging the ball from touch line to touch line in great style but not really making any meters and Fishguard were making some cracking tackles but that didn’t stop harry using his quick step to out fox the Fishguard defence and dot down. The mighty wasps kept up the pressure from the re start and Isaac made a cracking break down the wing and off loaded nicely to Jac LLewellyn who got his well deserved try after having taken a knock early on in the game. Full credit to Fishguard who never gave up and after Jac James, Ollie and Mason had made good line breaks they made some good last ditch tackles to deny the wasps but Ollie as is now accustomed with his great running abilities ran over several Fishguard players to go over. Fishguard then got themselves on the score board with a well worked try that gave our defence no chance, but the wasps ended the half on a good note and after Mason had occupied about 5 different positions on the pitch to show how versatile he is got his score tally rolling with another typical gutsy run.

Half time came and as is normal the wasps were told to keep going at a tired Fishguard team and keep up the pressure. And boy did they do that with George and Isaac running the forwards and Bec and Jac James finding the space and it was down to Seth who despite having a knock and tackling like a trooper got his name in the lights with a great burst out wide. The game was becoming more and more open as the players tired in the muddy sticky conditions but the warrior that is Ollie who was almost out on his feet kept plugging away and testing the defence to find a hole and he eventually got his just rewards with another power packed try. With 6 minutes to go harry kept rallying his troops to push forwards and keep them Fishguard pinned back and his work was rewarded with another two tries to claim his Hat-trick, but his best contribution all game was a fantastic try saving tackle to deny Fishguard a certain try that had him roaring in delight . Fair play Fishguard came back at the wasps with a couple of minutes remaining and got 2 tries to help the score look a little more respectable. Final whistle blown….. and outstanding 63-17 victory for the mighty wasps!

That was hard work for all the players today, on a muddy big pitch and 9v9 they all all had to run that bit extra today and it was absolutely clear that Llangwm were happy to do it and out worked Fishguard, we have certainly played better this season and made it slightly hard work for ourselves at times with sideway running and static passing but they ground it out and found a way and that’s all we can ask for as coaches, massive thanks to the forwards who had a very changed pack and even Lyra and Bec getting involved and doing a great job shows that both girls aren’t afraid to get stuck in when the team needs them, in the centre, ollie, Harry, Nico and Lyra did a great job with fast hands and defensively they were spot on as well. The wide players Seth, Jac James and Bec had acres of space but kept looking for trouble, back yourself to go get that try!!

Well done wasps, that was a great result against a team that played well but it just showed how far we have come as a team, and showed what type of rugby we are playing is working for us and teams are struggling to contain our width and fast hands. Now rest up, relax and get ready for Wednesday!!
