U8's v Fishguard 22nd Jan 2023

Llangwm U8s v Fishguard U8s

After an uncomfortably cold training session on Wednesday evening, where we trained in wind, sleet and hail, today saw our Mighty U8s host Fishguard U8s at Cleddau Reach School in much drier and comfortable conditions.

A good-sized pitch was again marked out to encourage an open and free-flowing game and with significant numbers, we played four 10-minute quarters with nine players on each side and regular substitutions to ensure everyone had fair game time.

What followed has to be the best performance of our Mighty U8s so far this season! After a pre-match team talk reminding all players of the importance of teamwork and playing for each other, and maintaining our defensive line, the most memorable game of U8s tag rugby unfolded in front of our very eyes. The passion shown by our young yet Mighty U8s was inspiring and shows maturity for such a young group of players. Something just clicked with the players today, all of whom put in a mighty performance and gelled together as a team.

With a short break between each fast and furious quarter, the team talks focussed on working as hard in defence as we were in gaining ground in attack and scoring tries. Tags were won and turnover created with phases of pressure put on the opposition. Fishguard were no pushover however and kept coming back at us and took advantage where our Yellow Wall left gaps for try scoring opportunities. There are things for us to continue to work on and address in training, however today was cause for celebrating the great teamwork and passion shown by every U8 wearing the Llangwm jersey today! This was a group of players who genuinely showed their love of the game and playing for each other. Not one player gave up and everyone played to the very last, whether it be chasing down an opponent and winning a try saving tag within yards of our try-line or the memorable pressure that the Fishguard try line was put under for the last 90 seconds of the 4th quarter, resulting in Llangwm's final try of the game.

From all the coaches, we want to say a huge well done to every player and thank you to our vocal supporters whose cheering and shouts of encouragement are a huge lift to the players out on the field. Thank you as well to those timekeepers and scorers who help to ensure things run as smoothly as possible! Your help is very much appreciated. Finally, a big thank you to Cleddau Reach School for allowing us to use the school playing field, which helped towards relieving pressure down at Pill Parks.

The final score was fitting of the game and saw the honours shared Llangwm Wasps 11 - Fishguard U8s 11

Your Mighty Llangwm Wasps U8s today were:

Austin, Ben, Billy (1 try), Evan, Freddie (1 try), Iestyn, Isaac, Jackson (1 try), Jacob, Louis, Odi (Capt. and 6 tries), Steffan (2 tries), and Toby

Well done again U8s and we look forward to seeing everyone at training on Wednesday night and our next matches!

Dom, Dan, Tal, and Gethin
