Youth v Crymych 11th Oct 2024

Match report by Oscar Willington
A real tough night for the Wasps but also an educational one. I can think of two reasons why we lost the game, discipline and tackling. For once we started really well and went into a 12-0 lead. James made a great break up the field to set up Kieran S to score. We then scored another good in the corner thanks to Noah. With a start like that we should have carried the momentum through to the final whistle. As usual we also finished the game well and scored the last try of the game with Carter scoring and could have scored another try right at the end.
But in between we gave away an unbelievable amount of penalties by not rolling away from tackles, being offside and for holding the ball on the floor because we didn’t support the ball carrier well enough. We made it too easy for Crymych by letting them get good field position over and over with penalty kicks. When Crymych attacked we missed way too many tackles. Their ball carriers were able to get past our first line of defence too easily and when they spread the ball wide we weren’t organised in defence.
This was a really disappointing performance as we had played really well in our previous games and have been improving every game. We didn’t help ourselves by getting a red card and two yellow cards. We were down to 13 players at one stage.
To begin to win games regularly, we need to focus and improve on the basics. Tackling being the key aspect. But for the other things we all have to take responsibility for ourselves and think about what we are doing on the field. We have to stop giving away so many penalties and be more disciplined. All of these things are down to us, not the coaches.
We have our local derby against Haverfordwest next so let’s make sure we all get to training on Monday and make sure we turn up with the right attitude next week.
