U 10's v St Davids 20th Jan 2019

Today the under 10s travelled to the arctic circle to play against St Davids. Fortunately it started to rain which raised the temperature, unfortunately the wind then picked up which dropped the temperature back down to a balmy - 2.
The conditions made the game very difficult so hats off to the team for the spirit they showed in battling to the end against a powerful side. We missed a few first up tackles which put us on the back foot from the beginning but as is now tradition with this group they all pulled together to produce some breath taking attacking rugby managing to score some excellent trys. Poppy once again contributed well in attack and defence and really has a very good understanding of the game given the little time she’s been playing. I’ve never seen someone as cold as Poppy towards the end of the game but this didn’t stop her enthusiasm and commitment.
Harry carried dangerously and aggressively from the start and produced several barn storming runs that resulted in scores. Harry also suffered with his asthma today which was unsurprising given the temperature but still continued to impress whenever he had
the opportunity and he had a hand in nearly every attaching effort.
Jack’s influence on the game grew as the game went on with his powerful surges into the St Davids defence and in keeping with his efforts last week time and again managed to free his hands in the tackle to release the ball to players in space, a skill that’s very hard to master but one Jack has made his own.
Edward was spirited and shows real determination to keep the ball alive and test the opposition defence whenever he carried. Edward’s confidence grows with each game as does his understanding and he is showing a maturity in his performance particularly in the second half today when he made several metre eating runs.
Trystan was as we have now come to expect aggressive and powerful and as far as I could see had scored a try only for the referee to say that he was short of the line. In doing so he had carried half the opposition team with him over the line which inevitably resulted in a Llangwm score with the carnage his run had caused.
George showed his finishers instinct today when scoring an absolute classic of a wingers try when taking the ball at pace and rounding his opposite number to dive over in the corner. George didn’t feel well today but showed what this group is all about by coming back on to the field and sprinting miles for the cause in chasing people down and tormenting the St Davids team in attack.
Iestyn was excellent in both attack whilst scoring trys and defence whilst not missing a tackle. He showed his county quality standards in dominating every ruck he hit and even some old school tricks in securing the ball on a few occasions whilst wearing his Richie McCaw cloak of invisibility. Iestyn also sustained an injury today but battled on leading by example and inspiring his team as the skipper always does.
Manny had his best game of the season today and stood out with his sheer determination to never give in. Manny was very good with ball in hand scoring a couple of trys and in defence tackling as much as he possibly could and chased everything to the point of exhaustion which was shown by being the only person in St Davids who thought it was warm at the final whistle.
My player of the game today was Manny for his never ending effort to stem the tide of St Davids attackers from beginning to end.
It was a tough day today and gave us some things to work on during training. The effort and teamwork today was once again excellent. Nobody could ever accuse anyone on this team of not giving 100%. They all work so hard for each other and are as committed a group of players as you could hope to meet.                                                        Marc Davies
