U 9's win through to Finals on 9th Apr 2017

Under a slate grey sky the Llangwm U9's travelled to Narberth for their end of season tournament. Now dear reader I expect you are thinking that I am going to regale you with a mighty saga about dragons and warriors and so forth. But I am not as this would be an injustice to the simple truth of what unfolded at Narberth today. For today the travelling faithful who have travelled the length and breadth of this fair county with our mini warriors bore witness to a culmination of three years of hard work courage and steely determination bear fruits.

Drawn in a tough group Llangwm faced Cardigan, Fishguard, Narberth, Pembroke and a touring team from Bridgend. It is true to say that if you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride and never quit you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high. But so are the rewards. So with these thoughts and with some gentle words of encouragement (well more of a mailed fist in a velvet glove do or die type team talk) the U9's took the field against Cardigan.

In an entertaining match which Llangwm took by the scruff of the neck they ran out winners 4-0. From the off some ferocious tackling put Cardigan on the back foot from which they never really recovered . Shock and awe tackling disrupted their defences and Llangwm sliced through time and again eventually running out winners.

Tries from William Liam Leo and and Rhys.

Game 2 - Llangwm v Fishguard

Fishguard had won their opening game and were looking sharp. The game ebbed and flowed up and down the pitch. However unfortunately a high penalty count by Llangwm gifted Fishguard the majority of the possession who used this extra possession to great effect. They rampur 2-1 winners.

Llangwm try was scored by a fizzing Liam. A rugby player will find a way to win. They take bad luck and use that to drive themselves forward that much harder. Quitters take bad luck to give themselves reasons to give up. It is a matter of pride. Feeling deflated after the game it was time to pick the boys up. With a few words and a reminder that you gain strength and courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop and look at fear in the face. You are then able to say to yourself, I survived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.

Game 3 Llangwm v Narberth.

This was a thundering game. The boys in black and amber tore into the Narberth defence with a ferocity that is missing from much of the modern game. No quarter was asked for and none given by either side. With a ferocious defence Llangwm were able to set up a strong platform for an emphatic victory. The boys ran out 3-0 winners with tries from Liam x2 and Rhys.

Game 4 - Llangwm v Pembroke.

Knowing that a win would put then level on wins with Narberth and Fishguard at the top of the table the boys were determined to put a strong determined Pembroke side to the sword. With some outstanding tackling and destructive running Llangwm set about Pembroke with huge amounts of determination. Their efforts paid off and Llangwm ran out winners 3-0 with tries from Liam x2 and Leo.

With 11 tries scored and only two conceded and Fishguard and Narberth in similar positions it was time for the boffins to get out their calculators and work out a winner. Whilst this was going on llangwm had one last team to dispatch.

A strong touring team had been invited to replace St Davids and they had torn through the other teams with strong paced running and a a strong defence. Well that is dear reader until they faced up against by now a rampaging Llangwm team determined to finish the season on a high with a final win. So two teams faced off and from the off bone crushing sinew snapping tackles flew in from both sides. This game truly was a game of two titans of the U9's crashing into each other. Coaches roared their teams onwards parents winced and cowered at the ferocity. But Llangwm were the slightly stronger side and ran in two tries to the one and ran out 2-1 winners.
Two tries by Liam making the difference.

Whilst congratulating the other team news filtered through from the side lines. Llangwm U9's had done it. They had triumphed in their half of the tournament and were progressing to finals day in Crymych. This news was received to wild celebrations and tears of joy by players and parents alike.
This small squad of ten players had upset the odds. Through hard work dedication and a togetherness had triumphed and had deservedly gained their spot in finals day. I can not say how proud both John and I are at their achievement. They truly deserve to be there. But another tough game awaits them. Neyland progressing in the other half of the tournament. Show class, have pride and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself. This team has done just that through out this season. Finals day will be the 30th April in Crymych. We have two teams representing the Club in the U9's and U10's that I am aware of. This is an amazing achievement for a small club like ours. If you are free that day then please make the effort to come and cheer both these teams on in Crymych. I have watched and referee'd both teams and I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.
