U 10's v Pembroke 13th January 2019

On Sunday the under 10s played a strong Pembroke team losing narrowly after putting in the best team performance of the season. We also managed to field a full all Llangwm under 10s side of very talented girls and boys without having to borrow any players which was fantastic to see.
Every game the improvements in a whole team performance in which everyone contributes are brilliant. Each player is a vital cog in our rugby machine and puts in 100% for each other. We had a chat as a team before the game as to what each player’s job was in contribution to the whole team effort and everyone rolled their sleeves up and did themselves proud.
Poppy looks like she’s been playing rugby as long as everyone else and really looked the part on Sunday. She linked play well and on several occasions kept our moves alive by putting in perfectly timed passes and making strong runs. At one point Poppy took the biggest hit of the match and jumped straight back up and continued the battle.
Jack put in another strong offensive effort with his powerful surges into the opposition and worried Pembroke every time he got the ball. I counted three times in the second half alone where after scattering several players he cleverly managed to release his hands to get the ball away and create chances for other players with his quick thinking.
Marie was excellent and really shone in attack when making quick and elusive runs into the Pembroke defence. She also tackled powerfully and accurately and really got stuck into the rucks helping the team dominate that facet of play from beginning to end.
Harry had his best game of the season and looked hungry for the ball from the first minute until the last minute. Harry made huge yardage in attack eating up the ground and causing panic in the Pembroke defence every time he went near the ball. The opposition players were often queuing up to get out of the way as Harry threw himself at them mercilessly and tirelessly for his team scoring trys and creating space for others.
Trystan once again raised his game and selflessly hit ruck after ruck to win the ball. Trystan tackled hard and attacked with a physicality and aggression that never ceased. Trystan also scored a fantastic try when strongly bursting through several tackles before intelligently releasing the ball on the floor to allow himself to get up and dive over to score.
Iestyn was in excellent form in attack and defence and helped the team dominate the rucks to the point where Pembroke won only one ruck in the entire first half. Iestyn also scored trys and mesmerised the opposition defence when carrying the ball which meant space being created for others to be released once Iestyn had drawn the defence to him before passing it on.
Edward was very strong in attack and defence and played a new position for the first time due to Harry taking part in the scrums. Edward played maturely and confidently showing an eagerness to get involved making several lung busting runs, particularly in the second half.
George has really developed his defensive game this year and despite being smaller than many players in this age group never shirks the physical challenge. George is also a potent attacking threat, devastatingly quick, powerful and has the ability to side step out of a straight jacket as he did on several occasions on Sunday. When George went into first receiver in the second half and worked in partnership with Iestyn when attacking the blind side of the defence from the scrum Pembroke had no answer to his ability and before they knew it George was touching down after for trys of his own.
Manny also had his best game of the season on Sunday. He was aggressive and accurate in defence making a number of tackles and chased hard to get back in defence when our line had been breached. He worked hard with Iestyn and George at ruck and scrum time to work them into space and showed a game appreciation beyond his years. He also sustained a nasty injury that required carrying from the field. Fortunately Mr Luff senior has the healing powers of Jesus and after performing the miracle of convincing Manny that he didn’t need stitches or an ambulance managed to get him back on the field to play out the second half and then for the under 11s with Iestyn and George straight after the final whistle.
The player of the match title deserves to go to the team as a whole. This was a great team performance where everyone worked tirelessly and selflessly for their friends and made it such an excellent spectacle for the assembled crowd to witness.
