U 9's v St Davids 18th Feb 2018

Today the under 9s played away in a cold and drizzly St Davids in front of a large crowd of both home and away supporters which was great to see. We’ll get the result out of the way first. We came second, but that matters little when all present got to see a proper game of rugby played out by two determined and physical sides with no little skill on show. It would be wrong for me to single out any one player when everyone was excellent throughout so I’ll mention everyone individually. Edward played for the first time in a while today and captained the side. He was direct and aggressive with his running as if he’d never been away, resolute in defence and as any good captain does gave an insightful and analytical breakdown of where we’d gone wrong during the car journey home. Harry as always was abrasive and physical in everything that he did. He threw himself into everything with huge determination. In most cases he threw himself into opposition players with huge determination and was incredibly hard to tackle. Jack was excellent today. A real powerhouse going forwards taking several attempts at stopping him each time he had the ball. He also has quick feet and quick hands managing to suck defenders in and released our players on several occasions. Lucas once again improved on the previous week and gets better and better each time he plays. His confidence going forwards, willingness to carry the ball and the impressive number of tackles he put in was great to see today. On current form Lucas could work his way through a gap in a locked door such is his ability to break through the opposition defensive line. Manny was excellent today. He carried hard and picked good lines of running. He also worked his socks off in defence picking himself up off the floor time and again to tackle which was probably the reason it took me so long to get the mud off my car seats afterwards. Iestyn was first class today and was as good going forward as he was defending putting in the highest amount of tackles of any player from either side. He organised the team and was a real leader today often making decisive tackles and reading an opposition move to snuff out an attack before it had begun. We also benefited from Leo joining us for the second half who had run straight from the under 10s fixture he had been playing in to make big impact for us. He was a very welcome extra ball carrier who really took the fight to St Davids making big holes in their defence which created a couple of tries for us. An excellent effort with some real quality on show. A pleasure to watch guys.
